In order to appreciate and embrace our students' (and often ours) linguistic heritage, we need to understand it more fully. Geographically, students in the Southern Appalachian region, most of the learners who populate our classrooms, speak the Appalachian English (AE) dialect. While more recent linguistic patterns among today's children and teens differ from those of yesteryear's, the traits described and shared on this page are still prevalent.
